If You Love Mitch Albom, These three Authors Will Tug at Your Heartstrings

When I taught high school English, I introduced The Five People You Meet in Heaven to my freshmen. Then, in sophomore year, we followed it up with The Next Person You Meet in Heaven. By junior year, we dove into Tuesdays with Morrie. Every time I teach Tuesdays with Morrie, I find something new—either in the book or in myself. If you love Mitch Albom, check out these three authors that will tug at your heartstrings:

Paulo Coelho – The author of The Alchemist writes inspiring stories that reflect on life’s purpose and personal growth. I didn’t read The Alchemist until about two years ago, but it had a lasting impact on me. Since then, I’ve become more intentional about living in the present moment and valuing the power of personal connections.

Fredrik Backman – Known for books like A Man Called Ove, Backman blends humor, emotion, and life lessons in a way that’s reminiscent of Albom’s heartwarming style. Backman reminded me that you don’t need to do big, grand things to change the world; often, it’s the small, everyday actions that make the biggest impact.

Anne Lamott – Her books, such as Traveling Mercies and Bird by Bird, blend humor, wisdom, and reflections on life, spirituality, and human connection. As a writer, I often struggle hitting the “post” button on a blog. Lamott reminded me to be mindful of my inner critic and be compassionate with myself.

Mitch Albom’s books have a way of touching the soul and sparking self-reflection, which is why I loved sharing them with my students. If you love Mitch Albom, these three authors will tug at your heartstrings: Paulo Coelho, Fredrik Backman, and Anne Lamott. Their works explore life’s purpose, human connection, and the beauty in everyday moments.
